Are Reusable Straws Safe?

reusable straws

Absolutely! Reusable straws are safe because they help limit the use of single-use plastic straws. The fact that they are reusable, they don't contribute to the staggering plastic waste problem.

Reusable straws are the answers and solution to the extensive harmful effects of single-use plastic straws. They are safer choices because they are chemical-free. These straws are also made from sustainable materials like glass, silicone, bamboo and stainless steel.

Private organizations and governments have taken action against plastic waste. They have raised awareness of the adverse effects of plastics on the environment and human health.

Billions of straws are thrown annually. It's common knowledge that plastic straws are non-biodegradable which means it takes hundreds if not thousands of years for them to decompose. When they break down, they become 'microplastic' which has already caused many deaths among sea animals.

Sure, you can recycle disposable straws but that's not as easy as it sounds. Due to them being too small and lightweight for mechanical recycling sorters, they tend to mix with other wastes and are too small to separate. So most of these straws end up in landfills, incinerators and bodies of water.

With the growing problem about plastic waste, many people are making the switch to eco-friendly products like reusable straws. Unlike disposables, reusable straws can be used more than once and with proper care, can be used for many years.

Glass Straws

Glass reusable straws are wonderful alternatives because they are reliable and reusable. They can be recycled at the end of their life which also means that they won’t be a contributing factor to polluting the environment.

Since glass is transparent and clear, you can easily spot any debris and residue which is a sign that your straw is due for washing. It is necessary to keep glass straws clean to prevent the proliferation of bacteria and moulds, both of which can cause serious health problems.

Additionally, glass straws won't become soggy or bent when used. They are also safe to use for drinking because they won't leach any chemicals and do not alter flavours.

Unfortunately, glass straws can break when they are mishandled. Since they are prone to breakage, they can be unsafe if they have signs of a fissure. Moreover, they should be used with caution especially when used with hot drinks because they can conduct heat.

Silicone Reusable Straws

Reusable straws made from silicone are fantastic and safer alternatives. They are flexible, soft and super comfortable to use because of their silicone tip which can prevent chipping of the teeth.

One good example is Eco Living's silicone straws which are made from food-grade silicone minus the plastic fillers. They won’t taste like plastic and definitely won’t impart any flavour. Plus, they can withstand warm temperatures so you can use it with hot drinks.

When they’re ready to go, they can be either recycled or composted. Silicone breaks down naturally and converts back to its original composition; carbon, water and sand.

Bamboo Reusable Straws

Bamboo straws are the most eco-friendly among reusable straws. They are one with the environment and they are 100% compostable at the end of their lives.

Bamboo is one of the most sustainable materials and is the go-to material by eco brands. As plants, they grow without artificial irrigation and the use of chemicals like pesticides and fertilizers. As a material, bamboo is known for its natural antibacterial properties which makes it less likely to harbour germs and bacteria. They are also an excellent choice for any type of drink, from coffee to smoothies. Plus, they are durable and cost-efficient. No harm for the environment, wallet-friendly too!

Stainless Steel Straws

Reusable stainless steel straws are also safe because they are 100% from plastic-materials. If you are interested in getting a set, we recommend checking out Klean Kanteen’s 5pc Straw Set multi-coloured. They have even incorporated silicone tips and slightly angled features for a more comfortable and safer sipping experience. Moreso, they are made from food-grade stainless steel that is ideal for beverages. Just like the others, stainless steel straws never impart flavours and leach chemicals.

Stainless steel straws usually come with a cleaning brush to easily clean them so that they can be reused again. These straws positively look after the planet without adding an iota of waste. Furthermore, they are durable and cost-efficient in the long run.

The only downside is they are great conductors of heat. You must take extra caution when handling hot liquids so you can prevent scalding. Also, since they do not bend, it is highly recommended not to use them if you are walking or driving.
